WHAT IS DEER VELVET?
A completely natural substance, deer antler velvet is full of
ingredients that promote good health, stamina, and recovery. It
contains a number of natural growth factors, including IGF I and
II, cartilage, glucosamine sulfate, chondroitin sulfate and collagen.
Glucosamine sulfate and chondroitin sulfate are both key ingredients
in the treatment of joint pain such as arthritis, being natural
anti-inflammatories and helping rebuild damaged cartilage.
HOW
IS IT COLLECTED?
Deer velvet is deciduous - that is, it is shed naturally every
year in late winter/ early spring. We are certified under the
National Velveting Standards Body programme to
remove the velvet, which is done by one of our team with veterinary
training. The National Velveting Standards Body programme operates
under the Government's National Animal Welfare Advisory Committee.
HOW
IS IT PROCESSED?
Once collected, the velvet is sent to Ministry of Agriculture
(MAF) licensed Luggate Game Packers who process and freeze dry
the velvet. It is then sent to Alaron Products in Nelson who powder,
capsulize, and do lab tests on the velvet before packaging it.
Alaron is also a MAF licensed processor.
WHAT
RESEARCH IS THERE ON DEER VELVET?
New Zealand is at the forefront of research into the properties
of deer velvet. While a lot of initial work was done by Asian
and Russian scientists, Deer Industry New Zealand and AgResearch
Invermay have set up a research fund to continue the excellent
work begun by AgResearch Invermay.
While much of the research is not available on the Internet, we
have put links to some other relevant
material.
It has been widely accepted for thousands of years in Asian countries
that deer velvet is, at the very least, an essential tonic. The
continuing scientific work being done now is proving that.
